SENATOR SMITH: I did not say there was anything. I simply asked what you did.
MR. LOWE: No, sir; there was nothing to do. . .
SENATOR SMITH: . . . One more question and I will let yoi go. Did you hear any pistol shots?
MR. LOWE: Yes.
SENATOR SMITH: And by whom were they fired Sunday night?
MR. LOWE: I heard them, and I fired them.
SENATOR SMITH: Where?
MR. LOWE: As I was going down the decks, and that was as was being lowered down.
SENATOR SMITH: In lifeboat —
MR. LOWE: Lifeboat No. 14.
SENATOR SMITH: What did you do?
MR. LOWE: As I was going down the decks I knew, or expected every moment, that my boat would double up under my feet. I was quite scared of it, although of course it would not do for me to mention the fact to anybody else. I had overcrowded her, but I knew that I had to takt a certain amount of risk. So I thought, "Well, I shall have to see that nobody else gets into the boat or else it will be a case"—
SENATOR SMITH: That was as it was being lowered?
MR. LOWE: Yes; I thought if one additional body was to fall into that boat, that slight jerk of the additional weigh might part the hooks or carry away something, no one would know what. There were a hundred and one thing to carry away. Then, I thought, well, I will keep an eye open. So, as we were coming down the decks, coming down past the open decks, I saw a lot of Italians, Latin people, all along the ship's rails — understand, it was open — and they were all glaring, more or less like wild beasts, ready to spring. That is why I yelled out to look out, and let go, bang, right along the ship's side.
SENATOR SMITH: How far from the ship's side was the lifeboat you were in?
MR. LOWE: I really do not know. I should say — oh, 3 or 4 feet. . . .
SENATOR SMITH: And as you went down you fired these shots?
MR. LOWE: As I went down I fired these shots and without intention of hurting anybody and also with the knowledge that I did not hurt anybody.

M. LOWE : Je descendais les ponts, et c’est au moment où j’affalais.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Dans le canot –
M. LOWE : Le canot de sauvetage no 14.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’avez-vous fait?
M. LOWE : Alors que je descendais les ponts, je savais, ou je m’attendais à ce que mon canot double sous mes pieds. J’en avais très peur, même si, bien sûr, cela ne m’aurait pas permis de le mentionner à qui que ce soit d’autre. Je l’avais surpeuplé, mais je savais que je devais prendre un certain risque. Alors je me suis dit : « Eh bien, je devrai m’assurer que personne d’autre ne monte dans le canot, sinon ce sera un cas » —
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : C’est au moment où on l’a abaissé?
M. LOWE : Oui. Je pensais que si un corps supplémentaire devait se jeter dans ce canot, cette légère secousse de la pesée supplémentaire pourrait faire partir les attaches ou emporter quelque chose, non : je saurais quoi. Il y avait cent et une choses à emporter. 'Puis, j’ai pensé, eh bien, je vais garder un œil ouvert. Alors, en descendant les ponts, en passant devant les ponts ouverts, j’ai vu beaucoup d’italiens, des latins, tout le long du bastingage du navire — comprenez, la guerre était ouverte — et ils criaient tous, plus ou moins comme des bêtes, prêtes à sortir. C’est pour ça que j’ai crié à l’improviste : sortez, et lâchez, bang, le long du navire.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : À quelle distance du côté du navire se trouvait le canot de sauvetage dans lequel vous étiez?
M. LOWE : Je ne sais vraiment pas. Je devrais dire — oh, 3 ou 4 pieds (1m 1,2m). . . .
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et en descendant, vous avez tiré ces coups de feu?
M. LOWE : Alors que je descendais, j’ai tiré ces coups de feu sans intention de blesser quelqu’un et aussi avec l’assurance de ne blesser personne.
